RESUME READINESS

A resume is a snapshot of your professional story, highlighting your experience, skills, and accomplishments. It’s a marketing tool to help you present yourself as a strong candidate.

It is also one of the most important parts of your EICOP Internship Program application. Here are some basic rules to make sure you submit a competitive resume.

What to include on your resume:

Format & Layout
  • One page only — edit until it fits
  • PDF format
  • Clean, professional font (10–12 pt text, 14–16 pt headings)
  • White space for readability (no wall of text)
  • Aligned margins and consistent spacing
  • No Photos
  • No Graphics
  • Use color sparingly
Contact Information
  • Full name (bold and easy to find)
  • Phone number (cell, professional voicemail)
  • Professional email address (DO NOT USE YOUR SCHOOL EMAIL)
  • LinkedIn profile (custom URL)
  • Portfolio/website link (if relevant)
Education
  • Degree(s) earned, major(s), and institution
  • Graduation year or “Expected [Year]” (required)
  • Honors or awards (if space allows, no coursework lists)
Work Experience (Most critical section)
  • Reverse chronological order
  • Job title, company name, location, and dates (month/year)
  • 3–5 bullet points per job starting with action verbs
  • Every bullet must show impact (numbers, percentages, dollar amounts, time saved, volume handled, rankings improved, etc.)
  • Focus on results, not just duties
  • Only include relevant experience
Skills
  • Hard skills relevant to the job (software, tools, languages)
  • Soft Skills  — show the ones that are reflected in your experience (management, leadership) not ones that you would say about yourself (hardworking, good communicator)
Special Highlights (Optional but powerful if relevant)
  • Awards (include year and context if not obvious)
  • Clubs or organizations (leadership roles noted)
  • Special training or certifications
  • Competitive programs you were accepted into
  • Scholarships or grants (especially merit-based)

DON'T FORGET

Proof & Polish

  • Spellcheck and have a real person review
  • Consistent punctuation for bullets
  • Avoid filler words (“responsible for,” “various”)
  • No passive voice
  • File name: Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf
  • Must be a PDF
  • Make sure you don’t have an extra white page

Tailor Every Time

  • Match keywords from the job posting
  • Reorder bullet points so the most relevant are first
  • Cut unrelated info that doesn’t support your candidacy

Final Gut Check

  • Can someone scan it in 8 seconds and know why you’re a fit?
  • Does it print clean in black and white?
  • Would you hire you after reading it?
